The City of Tucson Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) are set to begin the corridor study for the widening of 22nd Street from Interstate 10 east to Kino Parkway. The goal of the corridor study is to develop concepts that will add one new travel lane in each direction on 22nd Street, a grade-separation at 22nd Street and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, and intersection improvements along the corridor.
The corridor study will begin with the establishment of a Citizens Oversight Committee (COC) to provide support on urban transportation planning, land use, and connectivity. COC members will act as liaisons between the Corridor Planning Team and the general public while gathering information from property owners, businesses and neighborhood associations within the corridor. The City of Tucson Mayor and Council approved the formation of the COC on July 8, 2008.
The COC’s objective is to have a diverse representation of property owners, homeowners, business owners, and neighborhood associations in the project area as well as alternate modes. All applications must be submitted by August 25, 2008.
The corridor study is anticipated to take one year, during which time the COC will meet monthly. In addition to these monthly meetings, COC members will participate in community open houses and planning workshops during major planning milestones.
The 22nd Street Roadway Improvement Project is a major urban transportation corridor project funded by the voter-approved Regional Transportation Authority in 2006. The project’s purpose is to promote multi-modal transportation while focusing on mobility, capacity and safety. For more information on the corridor study, application or submittal process, please call TDOT Project Manager, Janice Cuaron at 791-4371.
